Balwyn

Balwyn is a residential suburb in the state of Victoria. The community, with its estimated population of 15,312 residents occupying an area of 5.6 square kilometres, is located roughly 11.6 kilometres east of the Central Business District of Melbourne, the state capital. Its name, which means "the home of the vine", is believed to have been derived from a conjunction of the words bal (Gaelic) and wyn (Saxon).

Formerly of the City of Camberwell, Balwyn is now under by the Local Government Area of the City of Boroondara. The suburb is part of the State Districts of Kew and Box Hill (in the Victorian Legislative Assembly) and the Federal Division of Kooyong (in the Australian House of Representatives). The area, which was part of the 1841 Special Survey by Henry Elgar, is surrounded by the communities of Balwyn North, Kew, Kew East, Mont Albert, Mont Albert North, and Hawthorn East.

Residents of Balwyn can enjoy spending leisure time outdoors with family and friends thanks to the open spaces within the community. These easily-accessible locales are Beckett Park, Belmont Park, Deepdene Park, John August Reserve, Maranoa Gardens, Minifie Park, and Outer Circle Linear Park.

Residents of Balwyn support its very own Australian Rules football team, The Balwyn Tigers. As for its cricket enthusiasts, the community is home to the Balwyn Cricket Club.
